B.R.I.D.G.E.S, short for "Building Relationships Thru Islamic Discipline & Guidance Educating Society," has been in Stoddard Terrace since 2015. Founded in the 1970s, Brother Omar and Sister Kemba embraced Islam and became pillars of their community. They raised 12 children and actively engaged in neighborhood cleanups, cared for the sick and elderly, and mentored local youth. Brother Omar's dedication extended to helping those caught in drug addiction, making their community safer during challenging times.
Brother Omar: Cultivating Youth and Community
In 1992, Brother Omar began hosting weekly gatherings for at-risk youth at 228 37th Pl. in the DMV area. This Halaqa, open to all, imparted essential Islamic principles like respect for parents, neighbors, and community cleanliness. It covered various subjects, from social skills to relationship counseling, often featuring guest scholars and community elders. Brother Omar encouraged students to take leadership roles, emphasizing community building, brotherhood, and sisterhood, all rooted in service to others. He instilled values of honesty, courage, accountability, cleanliness, and good manners, forging a legacy we at B.R.I.D.G.E.S are committed to continuing and sharing with others.
Continuing the Legacy: Empowering Communities Together
As a continuation of this long legacy passed down by OUR parents and the examples they showed us, as well as the direct lessons learned from Brother Omar Abdus Sabour, the founder and catalyst of B.R.I.D.G.E.S, we strive to make effective and positive change by Building Relationships thru Islamic Discipline Guidance Educating Society. We have an Open-Door policy to Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. We offer programs to help with the improvement and empowerment of the communities we serve.
